What is Borosilicate Glass?
Borosilicate glass is often referred to as scientific glass or hard glass, and it the same substance as Pyrex. Flameworking Borosilicate glass is different than traditional glass blowing, as it melts at a higher temperature and is safe in scientific applications. Borosilicate glass can withstand high temperatures, and is less prone to thermal shock. This is the reason why its used in making Pyrex bakeware as well as glass pipes.
When working borosilicate glass we use a table-top torch and a kiln, as opposed to the long metal blow pipes and furnace used in working with traditional "soft glass" (also known as soda lime glass). Borosilicate glass blowing is generally more accessible for beginners, as it requires minimal space and can be done without an assistant.

Meet BRahim
I got my start working with borosilicate glass as an apprentice at Revere Glass School in Berkeley, CA in 2008. There I learned the art of pipe making from a number of highly skilled glass blowers and subsequently spent a year teaching beginners lessons and loved it! I found that sharing what I know with students who are enthusiastic about a new medium was equally fun and exciting for me as well. After many years of blowing glass from my private studio I'm excited to get back to one of my first passions in glass- teaching classes!
